3/23/2020 Below are some RESPONSIBLE STUDENT HABITS I'd like to suggest for this time spent outside of school. While your number one priority should be to stay safe and healthy with your family, it is also imperative that you keep up with your classwork for the next 5 weeks to avoid falling behind once we return to school.
Last week the Issaquah School District spent a great deal of time deciding on the best way to handle this school closure, and late last week they released expectations.
Your teachers are required to update their website, and communicate with you, at least once per week (except for the week that would have been spring break April 13th- 17th).
Teachers will be providing you with extension and review materials, and will not be moving on to any new units or content.
Your teacher will accept missing work in accordance with their late work policy. If you have an IEP, it is likely that you have an accommodation to turn in assignments until the end of the quarter/semester; which means you can turn in ANYTHING from 2nd semester.
That being said, this is a new experience for all of us, we will need to have patience, and will need to communicate as openly as possible to make the best of this strange situation.
These extraordinary circumstances will provide you with many opportunities and it is up to you to choose to be a responsible student.
YOU will be in control of your learning
YOU get to control the pace at which you work through material
YOU get to decide how much time to spend on every class every day
YOU get to choose which learning resources you want to utilize
YOU get to decide what works best for you
But with great responsibility comes great obligation;
you will need to be self-motivated
you will have to be honest with yourself
you will need to reflect on your learning and habits
you will have to reach out for help when you need it
you will get to choose the learning opportunities that work best for you
What you should be doing:
Check your email daily
Check your class websites daily
Email any missing assignments to the appropriate teacher, especially if you want to improve your grade in a class (feel free to cc: me at [email protected])
Select activities or assignments to complete
Plan to complete at least one activity for each class a week (ideally more than one)
Spend more time working on materials for classes that you would like to improve your grade in
Check Skyward frequently (some teachers will choose to post assignments or updates on Skyward)
Create a schedule for yourself! You have no school bells to keep you moving from one place to another, but if you stick to a regular schedule, you will get more accomplished and feel better. (click here to learn more)
This situation is unprecedented, and less than ideal in many ways. A silver lining is that you, as students, have been given the gift of time to catch up on school work, or to work ahead to avoid falling behind.
Make it YOUR goal to come back to school with no missing assignments, so that YOU can finish the school year strong.
